Bake Your Lawn

We are are participating in the Real Bread Campaign's 'Bake Your Lawn'. We met Harry and Farmer Jake at the kitchen gardens where the soil had been finely tilled ready for the children to plant the wheat seeds.

Harry explained about the varieties of seed contained within the mix.

  • Chia
  • Illustrious
  • Mayflower (a new variety for this year)
  • Nelson
  • Palladium
  • Crusoe

The children were each given around 20 seeds. We learned that we needed to plant them in rows 15cm apart and to a depth of 5cm. Harry had prepared a wooden stick with holes in the help the children gauge the spacing, they were encouraged to place their seeds through the holes into the ground. Each row was 5 meters in length so plenty of space for everyone to get involved.

The children carefully placed the seeds into the holes and pushed them gently, so they fell through into the soil.

We are hoping to achieve 200 seeds per meter squared with an expected yield of 800 ears per meter squared.   This will hopefully  provide a good crop for milling and baking into bread.

The children then gently covered the seeds with the soil. Harry explained that they need to be covered to prevent the birds from eating them and to make them warm up ready for germination.

Harry then turned on the sprinklers to give the seeds water to help them to germinate. We expect to see germination within 14 to 21 days.

When we returned to nursery, the children put some wheat seeds into a tray and looked at them through the magnifying glasses. “I can see the seeds” “they look big".
